mood boards.
The following mood boards were created as part of a design style analysis assignment. The styles which allign with my personal style and interests were chosen, and a description of each style has been written.
brutalism.
Brutalist Design boasts an austere aesthetic that is iconically subjective due to its striking visuals of raw, unrefined materials, geometric shape language and muted colour palette. These characteristics create an industrial feel, which is often juxtaposed with the introduction of nature and textiles. The foundational minimalistic philosophy results in spaces that focus on practicality and beauty found in the materials used.
traditional japanese.
Japanese design has been cultivated over centuries and is influenced by history, culture, and native materials. It incorporates a unique, iconic design style that pays homage to heritage and applies Zen philosophy, which signifies beauty in simplicity in design and lifestyle—less is more. The layout and finishes of an interior designed in the Japanese style will be noticeably simplistic and display its foundation of minimalism and Zen interior principles, ultimately producing a tranquil feeling space.
wabi sabi.
Wabi-sabi (侘寂) is a Japanese philosophy that has developed into a design style centred around the appreciation and beauty in imperfection and impermanence. Seven Zen principles summarise wabi-sabi: Kanso (simplicity), Fukinsei (asymmetry/imperfections), Koko (aged or weathered), Shizen (natural materials), Yugen (subtle grace), Datsuzoku (freedom from habits), and Seijaku (tranquillity/silence). These principles create a style that typically features handmade or antique furniture and décor, natural and muted colour palettes, warm, soft and rough textures and raw natural materials.
